This may be the best Homemade Apple Pie you'll ever taste! We've reduced the amount of water used and substituted it with two teaspoons freeze dried apple powder to create the most flavorful apple pie filling. Grandma may just have to replace her current recipe!

Ingredients

  • 6 Cups Granny Smith Apples
  • 1/2 Cup Salted Butter
  • 1/2 Cup White Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons freeze dried apple powder
  • 3 Tablespoons plus 1 Teaspoon Water
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 (9 inch) double-crust pie crust - thawed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees
  2. Peel and core apples. Slice and set aside.
  3. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and stir to form a paste, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add both sugars, freeze dried apple powder and water; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  4. Press one pie pastry into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie pan. Roll out remaining pie pastry so it will overlap the lower crust by about 1/2 inch. Cut rolled out pie pastry into eight 1-inch strips.
  5. Place sliced apples into bottom crust. Lay four pastry strips evenly over apples, using longer strips in the center and shorter strips on the sides.
  6. Fold the first and third strips all the way back so they are almost off of the bottom crust. Lay one of the unused strips perpendicularly over the second and fourth strips, then unfold the first and third strips back into their original position, to create a lattice crust.
  7. Fold the second and fourth vertical strips back. Lay one of the three unused strips perpendicularly over top. Unfold the second and fourth strips back into their original position. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to weave in the last two strips of pastry. Fold and trim excess dough around the edges and pinch to secure.
  8. Flute the edges of the pie to your liking.
  9. Slowly and precisely pour the liquid mixture over the lattice crust, making sure it seeps over all sliced apples. Brush some onto the top lattice crust. Making sure it doesn't run off the sides of the crust. *Optional - Sprinkle with white sugar.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven (425 degrees) for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking until apples are soft. This will generally take 35 to 45 minutes.

Serve with warm or cold. If desired, top with whipping cream or vanilla ice cream and sprinkle with freeze dried apple powder. Enjoy!
